Cerenkov Counter for In-Situ Groundwater Monitoring of 90Sr

چکیده
Groundwater contamination from Sr is an environmental challenge posed to present and former nuclear weapons related sites. Traditional methods of extracting groundwater samples and performing laboratory analyses are expensive, time-consuming and induce significant disposal challenges. The authors present here a prototype counter capable of measuring Sr groundwater concentrations in-situ at or below the drinking water limit of 8 pCi/liter. The Y daughter of Sr produces high-energy electrons, which can create Cerenkov light. Photomultiplier tubes convert the Cerenkov light into an electronic pulse, which then undergoes signal processing with standard electronics. Strontium-90 concentrations near the drinking water limit can be measured in a matter of hours if it is in secular equilibrium with the Y daughter. The prototype counter is compact, can be deployed in an American Standard 6-inch, well while operated by a single person, and transmits the results to a central monitoring location.

Background: Despite its beneficial effects on human life, the nuclear industry has its own risks. Strontium 90 (90Sr) is one of the most dangerous radionuclides produced by the uranium 235 fission, and replaces the bone calcium in the human body, which causes cancer. Ensuring the safety of nuclear facilities to protect employees, people and the environment is among the main goals of nuclear saf...
متن کاملMeasurement of 90Sr in Reactor Wastes by Cerenkov Counting of 9oY
Determination of 90Sr in low-level radioactive wastes (LLW) from reactors is difficult because of the presence of so many other radionuclides in samples of interest. This problem was dealt with by radiochemical separation of strontium followed by yttrium separation and Cerenkov counting of the high-energy B-particle emissions of 9oY in order to quantitate s”Sr. Separation of this important nuch...

Strontium-90 is a major hazardous contaminant of radioactive wastewater and its processing sludges at many Department of Energy (DOE) facilities. In the past, such contaminated wastewater and sludge have been disposed in soil seepage pits, lagoons, or cribs often under highly perturbed alkaline conditions (pH > 12) where 90Sr solubility is low and its adsorption to surrounding soil is high. As ...

A long-term in situ subsurface instrument for monitoring radioactive contaminant plumes, as an alternative to soil analysis, is described. A portable, laser-based reader optically stimulates luminescence from sensors, each containing an Al2O3:C dosemeter. The sensors, designed for placement at various subsurface locations around a waste site, are allowed to accumulate dose for a predetermined t...
